The much-awaited Independence Day box-office clash between Awarapan 2 and Batwara 1947 has turned into a surprisingly one-sided contest. By Day 3, Emraan Hashmi and Disha Patani’s romantic-action drama had established a commanding lead over Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta’s Partition drama.
Awarapan 2 Takes a Massive Lead
Awarapan 2, directed by Nitin Kakkar, opened strongly on August 14 and continued its impressive run through the weekend. According to early Sacnilk figures cited by The Times of India, the film earned around ₹22 crore net on Day 1 and approximately ₹33 crore on Day 2, taking its two-day India net total beyond ₹55 crore.
On Day 3, the film was already reporting ₹4.71 crore in India net collections in early estimates, taking its running total to about ₹60.46 crore at the time of reporting. The final Sunday figure was still awaited, with the film tracking towards the ₹70-crore milestone. The film’s strong performance has been driven by the franchise value of Awarapan, Emraan Hashmi’s comeback appeal and strong audience interest in the romantic-action genre.
Batwara 1947 Struggles to Keep Pace
Sunny Deol’s Batwara 1947 has shown growth but remains considerably behind its primary competitor.
The Rajkumar Santoshi-directed period drama opened with approximately ₹5.75 crore net in India on Day 1. It witnessed a major jump on Day 2, collecting around ₹13.50 crore, taking its two-day domestic net total to approximately ₹19.25 crore. On Day 3, early estimates showed the film at around ₹1.40 crore, although the figure was still updating during the day.
The numbers indicate that while Batwara 1947 benefited from the Independence Day holiday, its growth has not been enough to challenge Awarapan 2.
A One-Sided Box Office Battle
The gap between the two films became evident from the opening weekend itself. On Day 2 alone, Awarapan 2 reportedly earned around ₹33.75 crore, more than twice Batwara 1947‘s ₹13.50 crore.

Why Awarapan 2 Is Winning
Several factors appear to be working in favour of Awarapan 2. The sequel carries the nostalgia of the 2007 cult favourite, while Emraan Hashmi’s return to the franchise has generated considerable curiosity. Advance-booking trends had also placed the film ahead of Batwara 1947 before release.
By comparison, Batwara 1947 is a more serious historical drama dealing with the Partition era. Despite praise for Sunny Deol’s performance and a strong holiday boost, its mixed audience response may be limiting its ability to convert the extended weekend into a major box-office breakthrough.
After three days, Awarapan 2 has clearly emerged as the winner of the Batwara 1947 box-office clash. While Batwara 1947 has demonstrated some recovery after its modest opening, the enormous earnings gap makes Awarapan 2 the clear frontrunner.
The real test now will be the crucial weekdays. If Awarapan 2 maintains its strong hold after the Independence Day weekend, it could turn this early victory into a major theatrical success. Meanwhile, Batwara 1947 will need exceptionally strong word-of-mouth to narrow the gap.
