In recent years, horror films—especially horror-comedy—have found a strong foothold in Indian cinema. However, Kajol’s latest release Maa steers clear of laughter and dives straight into the chilling world of mythological horror. This marks Kajol’s first-ever horror film, and she’s made a bold statement with it.
Directed by renowned horror filmmaker Vishal Furia—known for eerie thrillers like Chhori-Chori and Bali—Maa has impressed both audiences and critics alike. Furia’s expert direction, paired with Kajol’s powerful screen presence, has helped the film gain momentum at the box office.
Strong Opening Despite Tough Competition
Maa was released in theatres on 27th June 2025, clashing head-on with the much-anticipated mythological film Kannappa starring Vishnu Manchu. Despite Kannappa’s massive buzz, Maa held its ground firmly. The film earned ₹4.65 crore on its opening day in India—a solid start considering the competition.
Maa’s earnings increased on the second day

According to industry tracker Sacknilk, Maa saw a significant boost in its collections on Saturday. The film earned ₹6 crore on its second day, bringing the total domestic collection to ₹10.65 crore within just two days. This sharp rise in earnings suggests that strong word-of-mouth and positive reviews are working in the film’s favor.
With Sunday ahead, industry insiders expect an even bigger box office number, though these current figures are still early estimates. Official confirmations from the producers are awaited.
Kajol’s Maa is proving that horror, when blended with mythology and a powerful performance, can truly haunt the box office—in a good way.
