The real test for any film comes on Monday — the day that separates true blockbusters from weekend wonders. On the first Monday of May, the box office witnessed a fierce battle as five films from different languages went head-to-head. Among them, all eyes were on Retro, the Tamil action drama starring Surya and directed by Karthik Subbaraj.
Retro vs Raid 2 and Hit 3
Released on May 1, Retro opened strong with a Day 1 collection of ₹19.25 crore, but couldn’t maintain momentum in the face of stiff competition from Ajay Devgn’s Raid 2 and Nani’s Hit: The Third Case. While Surya’s film made a decent weekend impression, it began to slip behind its rivals post-Sunday.

Monday Test Results: Did Retro Hold Up?
On its fifth day, Monday, Retro’s earnings dropped over 50%, bringing in ₹3.35 crore, according to early estimates by Sacnilk. This brings the film’s total domestic collection to ₹46.50 crore. Though not a disaster, the fall shows that Retro is starting to lose steam.
Day-wise Collection of Retro:
- Day 1: ₹19.25 crore
- Day 2: ₹7.75 crore
- Day 3: ₹8 crore
- Day 4: ₹8.15 crore
- Day 5 (Monday): ₹3.35 crore
Competitors Lead the Pack
In comparison, Raid 2 and Hit 3 managed better Monday holds. Raid 2 collected ₹7.75 crore and Hit 3 brought in ₹4.15 crore on the same day — both outperforming Retro.
Despite the dip, Retro still has a solid cumulative total and a chance to bounce back with good word of mouth. But as of now, Surya’s magic seems to be dimming slightly under tough competition.
